Liberal International 1947 - 2017: Bureau marks 70th anniversary in Oxford

On 10 April 2017, Liberals from around the world came together on the same spot at Wadham College, University of Oxford, where Liberal International was established 70 years ago this month. In 1947 Liberals from 19, mostly European, countries united in the aftermath of the horrors of World War Two to form our political federation and promote a world order based on liberal values; today, with over 100 members across 5 continents, our liberal movement is truly global.

The President of Liberal International, Dr. Juli Minoves was in Vancouver, Canada where he participated at the 70th anniversary meeting of the Western Political Science Association (WPSA) with a paper presentation. He met with Canadian Liberal MP Hedy Fry with whom he reviewed the advancements of liberalism in Canada since the last election, the LI manifesto process and the joint work that LI and the Liberal Party of Canada can do to foster Human Rights in the world.

LI Bureau after Bulgaria vote: Reject coalition with far-right political forces

While marking the 70th anniversary of Liberal International, the LI Bureau of the world’s oldest political international evaluated the situation in Bulgaria in the aftermath of the early elections that took place on 26th of March. The Bureau congratulated its member Dhzevdet Chakarov for his re-election in the national Parliament and asked him to convey the congratulatory message to the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF, LI full member) president Musftafa Karadayi, the president of honour Ahmet Dogan and the party membership for the good result.

European Parliament to Nicaragua: Stop harassing the liberal opposition

21st Century Parties: adapting to changing realities

In this context, the National Democratic Institute (LI Cooperating Organisation) launched in 2016 a 21st Century Parties Initiative on party renewal. The former leader of the multi-ethnic People’s Justice Party (PKR Malaysia – LI full member), Anwar Ibrahim, has seen his final appeal for freedom rejected by a court in Malaysia and will be forced to serve out the final 16 months of his politically motivated sentence of sodomy, barring him from contesting the 2018 national elections.

Elections see LDP and opposition end the authoritarian rule in Macedonia

The early elections in Macedonia have seen an overall victory for the opposition political parties, which pledged during their campaigns to end years of rule by the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party. Liberalno-demokratska partija (LDP), LI full member, returns to the Macedonian parliament with 2-3 seats, as part of the broad coalition led by the Social Democrats (SDSM).

German Federal President Joachim Gauck quoted one of the most influential [liberal] thinkers of his generation, Ralf Dahrendorf, who in a "prophetic speech" in 1997 warned that globalisation might "produce more authoritarian than liberal constitutions.” This is the challenge which the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (LI cooperating organisation) aimed to answer with the "Re-Shaping Europe" European Future Conference in Berlin this week.
