Liberal International 1947 - 2017: Bureau marks 70th anniversary in Oxford

On 10 April 2017, Liberals from around the world came together on the same spot at Wadham College, University of Oxford, where Liberal International was established 70 years ago this month. In 1947 Liberals from 19, mostly European, countries united in the aftermath of the horrors of World War Two to form our political federation and promote a world order based on liberal values; today, with over 100 members across 5 continents, our liberal movement is truly global.

In the presence of many prominent liberals from Central and Eastern Europe, the Promoting Tolerance Programme ran jointly by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC) since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of communist regimes in Eastern Europe, has celebrated its 25th Anniversary in Berlin. On the occassion, Emil Kirjas, LI Secretary General and alumni of the Programme, shared his experiences and enthusiasm for fighting discrimination, racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism.

LI LGBTI WG Chair Calls on the Mayor of Sofia to Protect the LGBTI Community

Chair of LI LGBTI Working Group Frank Van Dalen has called on the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, to protect the rights of the LGBTI community in light of the news that Sofia Pride is in danger. The statement was prompted after a number of different anti-LGBTI incidents in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, which as it has recently emerged has allowed a so-called "clean up" action by the ultra nationalist group "National Resistance" on the same day and place as the annual Gay Pride in the city.
