Boost for elections observation teams as Liberals strengthen ties with OSCE
Thursday 9 February 2017 14:02

Liberals from the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (ALDE PACE) – the international organisation charged with upholding human rights standards in Europe and beyond – has strengthened relations with the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) over election monitoring missions, during a recent meeting in Strasbourg.

Welcomed to discuss election observation practices by ALDE PACE president, Jordi Xuclà, the Director of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s primary institution ODIHR, Michael Link, discussed election observation strategies in relation to the forthcoming constitutional referendum in Turkey.

The discussion focused on cooperation between PACE and OSCE/ODIHR in election observation missions. “It is essential to reinforce synergies between ODIHR and PACE monitors to achieve the most objective assessment of electoral practices, assessment which is technically reliable and has political legitimacy. Close cooperation can also reduce the risk of “forum shopping” where state authorities extend invitations only to observer missions they deem less critical”, read a summary from ALDE PACE.
