UK snap election called: LibDems only credible option for changing Britain's direction
Thursday 20 April 2017 10:04

While the United Kingdom attempts to chart its way through complex negotiations to withdraw from the European Union following 2016’s shock referendum result, the Conservative government has, this week, triggered a snap general election, with polling day set for 8th June 2017.

Leader of the UK Liberal Democrats (LI full member), Tim Farron MP, was quick to take up the Conservatives’ challenge, insisting that “this election is your chance to change the direction of our country”, while the Labour party – the official opposition which has been split over its position regarding Brexit - only presented its position on the election some time after the LibDems.

In a campaign that is widely seen as centring on Brexit, Tim Farron said: “If you want to avoid a disastrous Hard Brexit. If you want to keep Britain in the Single Market. If you want a Britain that is open, tolerant and united, this is your chance.”

“Only the Liberal Democrats can prevent a Conservative majority”, Mr Farron added.

In addition to the Brexit negotiations, numerous Conservative politicians facing investigation over election expense returns following the 2015 General Election, leaving concerns regarding the timing of this election, which comes in direct contravention of a pledge made by the British prime minister to the British people regarding a snap election just several months ago.

The Liberal Democrats remain the only nation-wide UK political party united in their opposition to Brexit.
