The Edmonton MP is tasked with advising the PM on matters relating to the LGBTQ2 community and examining past policies that were implemented by the government which could have disrupted the lives and careers of LGBTQ2 individuals at the time – a formal apology could be in the near future. This new initiative is part of the Government’s ambition to ensure that the rights and freedoms of all Canadian citizens are met.
“We have made great strides in securing legal rights for the LGBTQ2 community in Canada – from enshrining equality rights in the Charter to the passage of the Civil Marriage Act. But the fight to end discrimination is not over and a lot of hard work still needs to be done. Canadians know our country is made stronger because of our diversity, not in spite of it,” declared the Prime Minister.
Trudeau is the first PM to march in a Pride parade back in July 2016, further illustrating his support for the LGBTQ2 community in Canada and the rest of the world.
