Thailand adopts new constitution: Democrats sense political opportunity
Thursday 20 April 2017 10:04

After three years of military rule, Thailand is back on the path towards elections with the official installation of a new constitution earlier this month - the 20th document to be adopted in Thailand in the past 100 years.

Speaking to the media, Democrat Party (LI full member) leader, Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is also the current chairperson of LI cooperating organisation CALD – the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats - says he is looking beyond elections to securing long-term prosperity for his country.

Although a date for the next election has not yet been set, Mr Vejjajiva described how the Democrat Party will appeal to voters following years of military rule: “The atmosphere will change once the country enters election mode... But I look further beyond the election date. I focus on how the country’s problems can be solved, especially in regards to disappearing economic growth and equality.”

“We may have weak spots regarding political strongholds. However, after the absence of political clashes, I have had some talks with the local residents in the North and Northeast. I expect more understanding could make them confident in us”, said the former prime minister of Thailand as he presented an alternative to the marketable but flawed populist policies of his political opponents.
