Liberal International (LI) is the world federation of liberal and progressive democratic political parties.
This site informs you about liberalism, our policies, activities and member parties around the world
The secretary-general of the Liberal Party, Kamal Nissanka, describes his party’s search for a new direction: “The party is now in search of a committed full-time leader who is competent to understand both classical and modern liberalism with deep-rooted national issues and new trends in world affairs. As at present party is not in any formal alliance and engages in issue-based politics while discussing with other political parties and civil society organizations.”
The Sri Lankan Liberal Party, which was established 40 years after Liberal International was established, was created at a time when there was intense civil conflict in the country. Through the assistance of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF – LI cooperating organisation) the party was able to emerge from a Council of Liberal Democracy that sought to “discuss and analyse political issues both national and international, to promote liberal democracy in domestic and foreign affairs” into a party that contested and won elections.
