“I need to protect the party… If I remain party president, the party will be dismantled”, said Sam Rainsy after taking action. In an article following his resignation, the liberal champion said: “My ideas, my plans, my vision will be available for everybody, for every party. I would be happy whoever implements my ideas if they are good for the country and in my view they are good for the country.”
The CNRP will now be led by Mr Kem Sokha, the former leader of Cambodia’s Human Rights Party, which merged with the CNRP in 2012 to form the greatest challenge to Hun Sen’s grip on power in the 30 years that he has been prime minister. Previous attempts to marginalise the liberal opposition in Cambodia have been met with outcry from the United States and the European Union.
