Thursday 6 April 2017 15:04

As part of a series of meetings with a number of leaders in North America, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen (Venstre, LI full-member), has agreed a new strategic partnership with the Mexican government.

The partnership aims to solidify the political and economic co-operation between the two countries in a broad scope of areas such as climate, energy, health, maritime, agriculture, food products, business and human rights. Emphasising the importance of the agreement, Prime Minister Rasmussen said“We are already co-operating with Mexico in a number of areas, but now it will be formalised, and developing the partnership in depth will be strategically prioritised. The partnership with be an important platform for Danish business eyeing the Mexican market and for a closer co-operation between our governments. Mexico is an important partner in terms of free trade, the UN, health and climate, and it is in many areas a perfect match for Danish positions of strength."

The deal is expected to boost Danish exports of goods and services to Mexico from 5.7 to 7 billion kroner a year.

Rasmussen also met with US President Donald Trump to discuss EU-US cooperation, the green transition, NATO and fighting Islamic State (IS).The meeting was also an opportunity to mark the 100th anniversary of Denmark formally ceding the United States Virgin Islands to the United States on March 31, 1917.
