President Ouattara appoints Ivory Coast's first vice-president
Thursday 12 January 2017 15:01

Cote d’Ivoire has a new Vice-President of the Republic, HE Daniel Kablan Duncan, just months after parliament and the public backed President Alassane Ouattara’s proposals to strengthen the West African country’s democratic institutions.

Vice-president Duncan is an economist and the former prime minister of Cote d’Ivoire.  “This is a person of experience, a great servant of the state, who has demonstrated his exceptional personal and professional qualities in all the high functions he has occupied”, said President Ouattara, who was honoured with LI’s medal of liberalism in 2016 for his internationally recognised efforts to transform the liberal-democratic fortunes of his country following an intense period of civil war.

With Daniel Duncan stepping down as prime minister to take up his new post, President Ouattara appointed a smaller government team this week. The new cabinet is a team of 28 ministers and a secretary of state compared with 35 posts previously and it includes Amadou Gon Coulibaly, a close adviser and senior figure in his RDR party (LI full member), as prime minister.
