Maimane calls for President Zuma's removal after divisive cabinet reshuffle
Thursday 6 April 2017 11:04

Following a controversial cabinet reshuffle by South Africa's President, Jacob Zuma, which saw the widely respected Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan ousted, the leader of the Liberal opposition Mmusi Maimane has called for a motion of no-confidence vote in Zuma’s government.

Maimane, who has led the Democratic Alliance since 2015 (DA, LI full-member), stressed that such a decision is disastrous for the country's economy and that the ruling party ANC has turned into an organisation run by the President and the Gupta bosses. "We are fast running out of time to save our country from the clutches of the Zuma administration. It's now more than ever, that our commitment to removing Zuma from power is more resolute" he said.

The DA will organize a series of marches for change all over the country to protest the recent developments including a march to the ANC Headquarters in Johannesburg in order to call on the governing party to support the DA' s motion of No Confidence. Further, the party has launched an urgent application in Cape Town's High Court to stop the President's newly appointed Ministers from being sworn in. James Selfe‚ the DA’s chairman of the Federal Executive‚ explained that the DA wants the swearing in postponed until Zuma’s decision is reviewed or the motion of no confidence against him is debated in parliament. “The decision is profoundly irrational in the first instance. It is probably illegal in the second instance. But more than anything‚ it is cataclysmic for the South African economy and for its people….It is just bad‚ bad.”

This is just one of several attempts to impeach President Zuma, the most recent one of which involved a case filed by the DA in the Constitutional Court of South Africa over the President's use of public funds for non-security upgrades to his private home.
