Liberal Mayors: How to make cities liberal
Wednesday 14 December 2016 17:12

The second Liberal Mayors Summit, which convened at the ALDE Party (LI cooperating organisation) Congress is Warsaw, brought together twenty mayors from fourteen different European countries to discuss and agree on a document setting out the principles which make cities and local communities liberal.

Freedom and responsibility, free enterprise, inclusiveness, and trust were central concepts set out in mayor’s outcome document and central characteristics of what makes a city liberal. Bart Somers, Mayor of Mechelen (Belgium) and President of ALDE Council of the Regions said: “Mayors can be on the front line fighting populism and giving new answers out of a liberal ideology.” Adriana Krnáčová, Mayor of Prague (Czech Republic), praised the meeting adding: “This is important… how to promote this idea in the European Union and especially cities.”

The Liberal Mayors Summit and Network was created in 2015, responding to a growing demand to hear the voices of liberal mayors on matters of European relevance. The final document outlining what makes a city liberal can be accessed via the ALDE Party website, here.
