“This new platform gives us the possibility to expand our work for human rights and development in a considerable way with our liberal parliamentarians everywhere. I will be happy to announce this excellent news, part of our bureau strategy for 2015, to our next congress in Mexico City”, commented the LI President on hearing the news of LI’s observer status with the IPU. LI Treasurer, Robert Woodthorpe Browne, together with Secretary General, Emil Kirjas, led the LI delegation at the 133rd Assembly and formally assumed the LI seat.
During the Assembly session in Geneva, Liberal International organised a gathering of liberal parliamentarians present at the 133rd session. The meeting brought together liberals from Africa, Middle East and Europe, including both governing and opposition parties. Among present were Anne Brasseur (DP Luxembourg, LI full member), President of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe – PACE, Sam Rainsy (CNRP Cambodia, LI full member), Leader of the Opposition in Cambodia, Michael Kitt TD (FF Ireland, LI observer member), Deputy Chairman of the Assembly of Ireland, and Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR Malaysia, LI observer member), Vice President of the Opposition. Describing herself as “a veteran” at the IPU Assemblies, Cambodian MP from CNRP Saumura Tiulong shared her experiences with liberals and praised LI's direct involvement, saying: "we can make difference in Human Rights protection".
In the speech on the theme of the 133rd IPU Assembly “The moral and economic imperative for fairer, smarter and more humane migration”, Anne Brasseur stroke a clear liberal tone urging her counterparts to show leadership by taking action at national and local levels. She presented an eight-point blueprint to address the migration crisis at a pan-European level.
