LI Slams Putin at UNHRC Over Domestic Violence Decriminalization
Thursday 16 March 2017 13:03

Addressing members of the United Nations Human Rights Council on behalf of Liberal International, LI Human Rights Committee Member Phil Bennion (Liberal International British Group, LI full-member) has slammed President Putin for decriminalizing domestic violence and violence against women.

Referring to a recent bill adopted by he Russian Parliament which establishes violence within families as an administrative, rather than a criminal offence, Bennion said: "All forms of violence are a clear violation of the norms of international human rights and domestic violence is not an exception. As such the Russian state has a duty to enact laws which punish rather than ignore criminal acts as dictated by its international obligations...This is yet another draconian law in a chain of legislation curbing fundamental human rights in Russia and disregarding its obligation to protect women’s dignity."

He further called on President Putin to repeal the law decriminalizing family-based violence and to cease all attacks on fundamental human rights and freedoms in Russia.

This follows earlier calls by LI Vice-President on the Bureau and Chair of LI Human Rights Committee Markus Loening and LI HRC Member and Vice-President of the Africa Liberal Network (LI cooperating organisation) Rosemary Machua not to decriminalize domestic violence in Russia and repeal the bill.
