Grigory Yavlinsky: Anti-corruption protests offer hope for Russia's future
Thursday 6 April 2017 16:04

The publishing of the investigations revealing Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's alleged corruption practices has ignited waves of protests in Russia since the end of March, prompting Russia’s Liberals, YABLOKO (LI full member) to speak out.

Grigory Yavlinsky, Chairman of the YABLOKO between 1993 and 2008, applauded the protests describing them not as a threat to the state but “Russia’s hope for the future”.

In his statement, Mr. Yavlinsky recalled the history of his country: “The state collapsed twice over the past hundred years in Russia – in 1917 and 1991. Each time we paid a colossal price for this. Each time the cause of the collapse of the state was a split between the government and the society.”

Researchers found that Russia has a staggering level of corruption compared to other countries, “Today, in 2017, we once again observe a growing gap between the people and the government”, the statement noted.

Looking ahead to presidential elections in 2018, Yavlinsky called for “an opportunity [for people] to speak up and discuss the developments in their country openly and without censorship, and express their opinion”.

Grigory Yavlinsky's full statement can be read here.
