In his dynamic speech Farron sent an equivocal message that the “Liberal Democrats are defiant”, adding: “We haven’t given up. We won’t become indifferent. We reject the Hard Brexit world view and we will fight it every step of the way”. In a message to the British public he offered the Liberal Democrats as the “the real opposition” to the current Conservative government saying: “Whether you support Brexit or not, Britain needs a decent opposition."
In the aftermath of Brexit the Liberal Democrats have called for the United Kingdom to remain in the Single Market, advocating against so-called “hard Brexit”. The York Conference celebrated the fact that Liberal Democrats saw largest membership growth of any party recorded in the recent decades and has more than doubled in membership.
The Spring Conference voted on number of resolutions, including on refugee schemes, nuclear deterrence and decriminalisation of the possession of drugs for personal use. LI Vice Presidents on the Bureau Baroness Kishwer Falkner and Robert Woodthorpe Browne MBE attended the Conference.
