Europe's Liberals Call for Coordinated Effort to Address Looming Famine
Wednesday 15 March 2017 18:03

Upon an initiaitive from Charles Goerens (Democrat Party – LI full member), Member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg, the ALDE Group (LI full member) has raised awareness of the humanitarian catastrophe facing Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen in the European Parliament this week.

With approximately 20 million people facing severe malnutrition and looming famine, Charles Goerens said: “Unfortunately human stupidity and malice are clearly among the causes of the present famine, but this mustn't mean we remain indifferent to the plight of the endangered populations. It is up to us to respond with a strong humanitarian intervention, while being aware that we won’t be able to do everything."

According to the United Nations, 1.4 million children could starve to death this year as the world is dealing with the biggest humanitarian crisis since 1945.

The ALDE Group welcomed the financial efforts made so far by the EU to address the humanitarian crisis reiterating that it looks forward to the new emergency package for the Horn of Africa and Yemen.

statement from the Group however insisted that money is not enough to solve the crisis: “The lack of stable infrastructure and military conflicts in many of the affected areas further prevent the distribution of food and NGO’s intervention”, the statement read.
