EU takes step forward on Georgia visa–free travel
Friday 9 December 2016 11:12

Agreement on a proposal that sets out a path to visa-free travel between Georgia and the European Union has been reached by the European Council  and the Parliament this week. The issue was championed by LI full member, Republican Party of Georgia, during Liberal International’s 196th Executive Committee (EC) meeting in Tbilisi in May this year.

To reach the next stage the deal will need to be voted on by the European Parliament, which will happen before the Christmas break, and then national parliaments of member states.

In follow up the EC, LI vice-president Markus Loening, also called for vide-free travel for Georgians when he met with the then-speaker of the parliament, David Usupashvili in Berlin in June.

The decision comes on the back of an announcement by EU ambassadors to endorse another proposal to allow visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens, with the European Commission concluding that Ukraine met the necessary standards for visa exemption.
