DP Thailand takes helm of Asian Liberals, CALD
Friday 18 November 2016 11:11

With the participation of LI President Dr. Juli Minoves, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD – LI cooperating organisation), convened its 11th General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, where the Democrat Party (LI full member) took responsibility for chairing the direction of Asia’s liberal regional organisation for the coming period.

Accepting the chairmanship from Dr. Oyun Sanjaasuren (Civic Will Green Party, Mongolia – LI full member), Thailand’s former Prime Minister and leader of the Democratic Party, Abhisit Vejjajiva said: “The path to liberal democracy is not irreversible… The struggle, the fight, must continue. We have to assess both the successes and failures of the past as we try to move forward… We must reinvigorate, relate and reclaim.”

Flying straight from the GA to Marrakech to represent CALD at Liberal International’s 197th Executive Committee meeting, Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party and newly appointed CALD Secretary General, Kiat Sittheeamorn got the Democrat Party’s chairmanship off on a strong footing by engaging with liberals from around the world and explaining the challenges CALD member parties face with the rise of populism in Asia. Addressing the EC on the threat of populism, Khun Kiat spoke alongside LI Vice-President, Baroness Kishwer Falkner (Liberal Democrats, UK – LI full member), of the challenges facing his party in Thailand and including acts of physical violence.

CALD was founded in Bangkok in 1993. Find out more about the CALD General Assembly via their website, here.
