“It was very important that we focus our efforts on the urgent topic of democratic renewal in face of the challenges ahead”, SG Leissner said after the meeting at the National Liberal Club, before adding: “party internationals are democracy stakeholders and international institutions like the Community of Democracies should work more with them.”
During the UK visit, Secretary General Leissner met government ministers, parliamentarians, and civil society organizations discussing UK’s deeper involvement in CoD . Visiting the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, she expressed admiration for the way this institution deepened political participation through civil society outreach and the participation of individual citizens: “The Scottish Parliament inspired me with its innovative parliamentary work. They serve as a role model in a world where citizens express increasing lack of confidence in their elected governments.”
Maria Leissner, former Leader of Liberalerna (Sweden - LI Full Member) has led the Community of Democracies for nearly five years.
