Chrystia Freeland urges Russia "to be on the right side of history" at G7 meeting
Thursday 13 April 2017 10:04

Addressing the G7 Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting in Lucca (Italy), Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland (Liberal Party of Canada, LI full-member) has urged Russia to be on the right side of history.

“The combination of the horrendous chemical weapons' attack and the strong U.S. response has created the possibility of some real political movement, and this is why there was so much focus on Syria at the meeting" she said.

“Now, I think, is an opportunity for Russia to make that break and to use its influence with Assad to push the Assad regime to fairly participate in political negotiations that can bring peace to Syria. I really do hope that Russia will take this opportunity to be on the right side of history” she added.

The G7 Ministers tried to force Russia to drop its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on the background of increasing criticisms against the Kremlin and a split in the decision over new sanctions.

The new condemnation of the Russian position comes after a decision by Canada to extend its military mission in Ukraine to 2019, putting more pressure on Russia which has been found to prepare for further possible attempts to destabilise Ukrainian democracy.
LI Secretary-General Emil Kirjas met with Minister Freeland most recently at the LPC Biannual Convention last year where they discussed the importance of coordinating liberals and liberal positions at international institutions.
