Thursday 20 April 2017 11:04

The Cambodia National Rescue Party (LI full member) is gearing up for local elections on 4 June 2017 in spite of continued harassment from the governing CPP. While a number of CNRP lawmakers being imprisoned on politically motivated charges by Prime Minister Hun Sen, observers believe the party is expected to make gains, giving the liberals a boost ahead of a general election in 2018.

With less than two months until polling day the CNRP are looking to set the foundations to end prime minister Hun Sen’s three-decade long time in office by making gains in Cambodia’s communal elections. But, despite widespread popularity in Cambodia, the CNRP has faced challenges from numerous quarters including the government. Since the start of April, the party has been compelled to appoint a new leadership since then party president was forced to resign while this week visiting rights to political prisoners revoked.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hun Sen came under scrutiny recently for attacking the CNRP during a New Year celebration speech, traditionally a time of unity.
