Tensions have been raised in Zanzibar since the Tanzanian government declared a peaceful election, in which a CUF victory was anticipated, in October 2015 null and void. Responding to the claims of the Inspector General, CUF Director of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Jussa, explained: “The international community must… support democracy in Zanzibar.”
Continuing his tour, Sharif Hamad met with former LI President, Annemie Neyts, at Open VLD (LI full-member) headquarters in Brussels. The two liberals discussed plans for their participation at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next week.
During the meeting with Liberal International, the CUF Secretary-General reported the increase in state interference with civil society, especially around the closure of newspapers. In the previous week, the editor of a Zanzibari newspaper and the author of an article were called in by police for questioning simply for publishing an opinion piece on "police and rulers’ fear of relinquishing power".
