Business, Trade, and Human rights congress panel announced
Thursday 10 April 2014 17:04

Human rights are at the centre of liberalism, and to emphasise the role of human rights in international politics, LI’s upcoming 59th Congress, hosted by LI full member VVD, will feature the panel discussion, "Business, Trade and Human Rights."

Building on the advances made at LI’s last Congress in Abidjan on private investment and social responsibility, this panel will debate at balancing sustainable economic growth with the promotion and protection of human rights. Featuring prominent figures from academia, politics, civil society and business, participants will debate the advancement of ethical trading and business practices on a regional and international level.

The panel will debate how governing and opposition liberals can apply the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and concepts such as corporate social responsibility and Labour Rights - particularly in the garment industry.

Speakers who have confirmed their participation include the leader of LI observer member, Singapore Democratic PartyDr. Chee Soon Juan, the Moroccan Minister for the Environment and Vice-President of LI full member INLWDr. Hakima El Haite and Mr. Gerard Oonk, Director of the Dutch non-profit organization India Committee of the Netherlands - part of the official “Stop Child Labour” NGO Coalition Campaign in the Netherlands. The panel will be chaired by LI Vice President on the Bureau and former German Federal Commissioner for Human Rights, Markus Loening.

Following the panel, the LI Human Rights Committee will hold its regular administrative session where LI members can provide an input on the future direction of the Committee's work and activities.
